Like the rest of the commercial real estate universe, healthcare felt the impact from the coronavirus despite the obvious need for these facilities. Leaders in this space found it tricky to navigate conflicting forces, such as the steady interest by investors in medical office space versus the number of medical practitioners that closed shop at the height of the lockdowns. Compared to less fortunate sectors, such as retail and hospitality, healthcare appears poised for a quick recovery. For that we can, certainly in part, thank the people that guided the industry.
WILLIAM J. KIMMERLE, AIA, NCARB | KIMMERLE GROUP 
During his decade-long tenure with Kimmerle Group, William Kimmerle has worked in capacities from designer to senior project manager to his current role of principal and senior associate. He now leads the firm’s healthcare studio; overseeing a staff of 35 architects and designers while directing teams on project development. Advising on purchases, equipment selection, technical design, branding, lease negotiations and complex issues, Kimmerle remains deeply involved in projects and has a strong impact on healthcare facility design and use as an internal consultant for healthcare facility operations teams and a main point of contact for hospitals and healthcare systems. In addition to overseeing the firm’s Urban Studio and its procurement division, Kimmerle Workspace, Kimmerle additionally works to expand health systems in lacking, urban and at-risk communities, to deliver best practices in easily accessible locations.
